How the Internet of Things is Changing Manufacturing

June 23, 2017 By Carol Scheafer

How the Internet of Things is Changing Manufacturing

The Internet of Things is dramatically improving the way that manufacturers do business. Innovative IoT solutions allow manufacturing companies to collect and analyze large volumes of data from a variety of sources. This increases the company’s efficiency, improves their visibility and decreases the cost of production. It also allows manufacturers to offer additional services such as ongoing maintenance and support of equipment.

The Internet of Things can give factories a competitive edge over their competitors. Connected companies are able to significantly increase productivity and quickly identify areas that need improvement. The IoT also allows companies to locate new business opportunities. Because problems can be found and resolved faster, smart factories are often safer than unconnected companies.

Microsoft IoT for Manufacturing

Many companies are already using Microsoft IoT solutions to improve efficiency. Microsoft’s solutions allow factories to quickly and easily monitor manufacturing equipment, customer equipment and improve field service.

When factory equipment doesn’t function as it should, production time can be slowed or brought to a halt. This can cost the manufacturing company a substantial amount of time and money. IoT sensors and advanced analytics can be used to find problems with equipment and to predict when parts will require maintenance, significantly reducing downtime.

Data Collection Improves Efficiency of Manufacturing Companies

Data collected by IoT sensors can help manufacturers gain a better understanding of every aspect of their business. This allows them to improve processes and accelerate innovation.

IoT solutions allow companies to offer effective performance monitoring and maintenance schedules for the equipment they produce. This can have a dramatic effect on customer experience.

Sensor data improves field service scheduling by alerting the manufacturing company of which technician and equipment is necessary to fix a specific problem. This ensures that issues are solved before they are able to become a much bigger problem.
