Vertical Farming and the IoT

December 8, 2017 By mcadmin

Vertical Farming and the IoT

Vertical farming has numerous benefits. When connected to the IoT, a vertical farm can produce stacks upon stacks of high quality crops without the use of herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, sunlight, soil or human intervention.

IoT-connected vertical farms have dozens of crop cycles every year. Traditional farms only have three. This type of farm uses 95% less water than conventional farming and creates absolutely no run-off. Vertical farming is better for the environment and far more effective than any other type of farming.

Fully Automated System

Human hands never touch crops produced on an IoT-connected vertical farm. Automated systems plant, care for and harvest crops. This completely eliminates the possibility of human error or poor yield due to bad weather, insects or disease. From temperature to watering, every detail is taken care of by the system.

Farming in Urban Environments

Vertical farming is the ideal choice for urban environments. These futuristic farms consist of flat growing platforms, stacked up to ten levels high. A variety of crops can be grown on these platforms. LED lights provide UV rays and exposed roots are carefully monitored by IoT sensors. Whenever necessary, the roots are gently sprayed with recycled water.

IoT-connected vertical farms produce more crops in less space and with fewer resources than any other method. Crops produced can be altered to refine taste and texture. Data collected by IoT sensors is carefully analyzed by the system to improve efficiency. The system continually “learns” from collected data.

The Agriculture Industry and the IoT

The agriculture industry uses the IoT to improve crop yields, reduce costs and make farms more efficient. However, there is always room for improvement. Our growing population requires far more food than conventional farms can produce.

Vertical farming allows more crops to be produced in less space. Since sunlight and soil are not required, crops can be grown in buildings and even underground. Unlike conventional farms, vertical farming does not use up potential living space.
