RFID Tracking

June 12, 2020 By Carol Scheafer

Radio Frequency Identification or RFID enables businesses to assign a unique identification to every part, product, and/or person in their facility. RFID provides an inexpensive and simple way to track multiple objects. Although several businesses already use RFID tracking to monitor inventory and track productivity, many others are still unsure of the benefits of a well-planned RFID solution.

How It Works

Organizations looking to utilize an RFID solution often wonder how it works and what it takes to get started. The type of solution required depends on numerous factors. By conducting a thorough evaluation of business needs and requirements, organizations can identify the type of system required. This can vary significantly from business to business.

For organizations wishing to track parts and other inventory, employees can quickly print RFID labels using an RFID printer. These labels come in a variety of shapes and sizes and attach easily to a wide range of assets. Most apply like stickers, although other varieties exist depending on the needs of the organization.

Once applied, RFID readers placed strategically through the building monitor and record the movement of each asset. This might include recording when assets move from one station to the next or when they leave the building.

Organizations can also track employee movement and productivity by supplying them with RFID enabled badges. These badges contain a small RFID tag, encoded with specific information about each employee. The RFID system accurately tracks when employees come to work and leave for the day. It also tracks how long they spend in certain locations like break rooms and workspaces. When used in combination with an RFID asset tracking solution, organizations can tie individual employees with asset movement, increasing accountability and efficiency in the workplace.

Benefits of RFID Tracking

RFID tracking provides numerous benefits. In addition to providing a unique identification for each person and/or part, RFID ensures accurate inventory counts, increases staff accountability and productivity, and effectively prevents theft. With the right RFID solution, organizations can take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to a wide range of problems.
