RFID Tags and the IoT
Radio-Frequency IDentification or RFID tags are small electronic devices consisting of a small chip and an antenna. The chip is generally able to carry around 2,000 bytes of data or less.
An RFID tag provides a unique identification for an item. This type of technology has become an extremely useful tool in both retail and healthcare. In fact, a little over a decade ago, many people believed that RFID technology would change the world. Unfortunately, it didn’t perform as well as hoped, until now. Today, RFID has evolved into an essential part of the Internet of Things.
What Does RFID do?
An RFID tag is basically a supercharged barcode with radio connectivity. RFID readers make it possible to wirelessly detect and track tagged items as they travel through the supply chain, are stored in inventory, sit on the sales floor or move down the production line. RFID readers, tags and chips provide a valuable identification system that is able to track enormous quantities of almost any item.
RFID and the IoT
The IoT uses data from a variety of different devices and integrates that data into new and existing business solutions. Even though RFID isn’t the only technology being used by the IoT to identify objects and connect them to the Internet, RFID tags and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies are the most commonly used.
What Makes RFID Different?
What makes RFID stand out is its ability to allow users to know exactly what’s going on with a specific object at a specific time. Besides location, an RFID signal can also be used to track the condition of an object including the temperature and humidity surrounding it. This type of information is useful for a variety of reasons.
