Improving the Computer Vision Capabilities of Raspberry Pi

August 4, 2017 By Carol Scheafer

Improving the Computer Vision Capabilities of Raspberry Pi

Carrying out complex AI tasks such as facial and object recognition used to require a data center. Today, these image recognition tasks can be performed with Raspberry Pi. With the help of image recognition software, the Raspberry Pi is able to easily identify faces and objects.

Now, a new plug-in can be used to boost the Raspberry Pi’s visual capabilities. The device uses twelve specialized cores to enhance the Pi’s vision recognition. This plug-in, when paired with a Pi camera and the necessary software, allows the Raspberry Pi to quickly and efficiently detect a wide range of objects in an image. Not only can the Pi detect faces, it can also locate specific parts of the face. This level of object recognition is a giant leap for AI technology.

The plug-in is a tiny, fan-less deep learning device that can be used to learn AI programming. The device consumes just one watt of power. Its low power architecture allows for a new segment of AI applications.

This innovative technology allows robots of all shapes and sizes to have visual capabilities similar to those of humans. It makes it possible for robots to identify people and locate objects that are in their path. The possibilities are endless.

Computer Vision Solutions for Unique Situations

The device provides a simple way to add vision recognition systems to surveillance cameras, drones and robots. Since it doesn’t require an internet connection, it’s the perfect solution for remote areas or situations where privacy is of great concern.

The plug-in significantly boosts the speed at which pre-trained networks are able to make inferences about data. In fact, up to ten inferences per second are possible. Previous systems only allowed around two inferences per second. Multiple devices can be chained together to deliver a linear boost to each device’s performance.
