Are Phone Numbers About to Become a Thing of the Past?

June 2, 2017 By Carol Scheafer

Are Phone Numbers About to Become a Thing of the Past?

The IoT is carefully weaving technology into every aspect of our lives. The Internet of Things is a term used for smart devices. These “things” can include anything from heart monitoring devices and biochips to home heating systems and clothing. The IoT is specially designed to make life easier.

How the IoT is changing the way we communicate

As the Internet continues to evolve, more and more people are turning to the web as their primary source of communication. Video apps such as Skype, Facebook Messenger and Google Hangouts are quickly becoming the preferred methods of communication.

With so many new technologies, many people are beginning to wonder if the Internet will replace landlines and smartphones. Although the Internet of Things is expected to exceed mobile phones as the largest category of connected devices by 2018, it’s not likely to replace our need for smartphones and desk phones just yet. However, your phone number might soon become obsolete.

A replacement for your phone number

WebRTC (Real-Time Communications) is a free open source project specially designed to provide browsers and mobile applications with RTC capabilities. WebRTC is connected through a simple Application Programming Interface (API).

WebRTC will enable high quality RTC applications to be developed for browsers, mobile platforms and IoT devices. This innovative technology allows devices to freely communicate with each other through a common set of protocols. The only thing necessary to make a call is access to an Internet URL.

All major browsers are either fully implemented already or are planning to implement this new technology.

The IoT is changing the way we live

The Internet of Things continues to change the way in which people use technology in their everyday lives. In fact, 16 billion connected devices are expected to join the IoT by 2021. The number of connected devices grows by approximately 23% every year with cellular IoT experiencing the highest growth rate.
