Mint Controls provides proprietary solutions and specialized expertise to solve a number of complex problems faced by organizations today. We custom build each of our IoT solutions based on the unique needs and requirements of our government and commercial clients.
Mint Controls’ team was responsible for the creation of three boards, made exclusively for the PRSS. These boards are currently being used at several of the U.S. LPOE including San Ysidro, the busiest border crossing in the world.
PRSS Operation
The PRSS is typically activated by a Customs Inspector who believes that a vehicle is attempting to evade inspection. An alarm button is pressed which activates a strobe light to alert others of the origin of the alarm.
Each port traffic lane includes the PRSS stopping system. This system is separated into three zones. The first zone includes PRSS-controlled signal lights and a message sign displaying warning messages in multiple languages. Zone two includes mechanical lane separation barriers, speed bumps, a PRSS-controlled gate arm, traffic lights and an overhead message sign with flashing emergency lamps. Zone three includes a PRSS-controlled tire shredder, gate arm, traffic lights and another overhead message sign with flashing emergency lamps.
These stopping zones are meant to give the port runner ample opportunity to stop. Most vehicles will stop at zone two. Zone three is designed to cause extensive tire damage and physically halt the vehicle to allow for apprehension.
The term “port runner” refers to a vehicle that forces itself through the border in order to evade inspection and apprehension. The Port Runner Suppression System (PRSS) effectively controls traffic and prevents port runners at U.S. Border Land Ports of Entry (LPOE). This type of system can be installed at any border crossing that requires vehicular traffic controls. The PRSS has already been successfully installed at many LPOE vehicle border crossings.
The PRSS can be configured to control as many traffic lanes as necessary. When an incident occurs, the system stops traffic quickly and safely. This reduces or completely eliminates the number of vehicles that are able to breach the port.
